NASCENTE DO RIO SÃO FRANCISCO | SOURCE OF THE SÃO FRANCISCO RIVER
O rio São Francisco é um dos mais importantes cursos d'água do Brasil e da América do Sul. O rio passa por cinco estados e 521 municípios, sendo sua nascente geográfica no município de Medeiros e sua nascente histórica na Serra da Canastra, no município de São Roque de Minas, e deságua no Oceano Atlântico, entre os estados de Sergipe e Alagoas. Também chamado carinhosamente de Velho Chico, a alcunha “Rio da Integração Nacional” se deve às entradas e bandeiras que nos séculos XVII e XVIII usaram-no como rota para penetrar no interior. Outro nome, “rio dos Currais”, se deve por ter servido de trilha para fazer descer o gado do Nordeste até a região das Minas Gerais, sobretudo no início do século XVIII, quando se achava ali o ouro que fez afluir milhões de pessoas a terra, fazendo a fortuna de muita gente e, afinal, integrando a região Nordeste às regiões Centro-Oeste e Sudeste.
The river São Francisco is one of the most important water courses of Brazil and South America. The river passes through five states and 521 cities, being its geographical source in the municipality of Medeiros and its historical source in the Serra da Canastra, in the municipality of São Roque de Minas, and flows into the Atlantic Ocean, between the states of Sergipe and Alagoas. Also nicknamed "Velho Chico" affectionately, the nickname "River of national integration" is due to the entrances and flags that in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries used it as a route to penetrate the interior. Another name, "Currais river", is due to the fact that it served as a trail to bring cattle from the Northeast to the region of Minas Gerais, especially in the beginning of the eighteenth century, when there was the gold that brought millions of people to land, making the fortune of many people and, finally, integrating the Northeast to the Midwest and Southeast.
